Dimora delle Balze

Autoritratto

The cozy Autoritratto room can be booked for single occupancy or for a couple. The ancient, stone-walled former workroom looks out onto a small external terracing ideal for basking in the golden Sicilian sunshine. Located in the section of the estate that once housed farmers and their families, the traditional ceramic vessels and patterned tiles that decorate the room function as a subtle homage to the space’s domestic roots. In addition to these evocative objects, contemporary furniture by designers such as Katrine Ahrens brings this intimate room alive.

Autoritratto, which translates to self-portrait, is named for the work of Sicilian painter Renato Guttoso, who was born in Bagheria in 1911. Working in the Expressionist style, his subjects were inspired by the warm colours and strong emotions of his native land. Though he was the author of many portraits, among them Giovanni Pirelli, Lucio Fontana, Alberto Moravia and Carlo Levi, he often portrayed himself, giving life to works characterized by vibrant energy and inner conflict.
